If you want to take advantage of the strong housing market to sell your current home and move into a new one that’s better suited for you, here are a few tips to get your home ready to attract as many buyers as possible.

  1. Declutter and depersonalize. It’s tough for potential buyers to see everything your home has to offer through the layers of stuff that accumulate when you live in one place long enough. Clear your home of the clutter and personal mementos to make it appear cleaner and more spacious.
  2. Make repairs. Unless you find a buyer who’s looking for a “handyman special,” most people want to purchase a home that’s move-in ready. If you have repairs that need to be made, take care of them—no matter how small they are—before you put the house on the market.
  3. Spruce up the outside. As COVID-19 has made its way across the country, outdoor living has become increasingly popular as people look for more ways to safely entertain family and friends. Before listing your home, make sure the outside sparkles. Pull the weeds, plants some flowers, clean the furniture and power wash the siding. You might also consider making bigger upgrades, such as installing a fence for privacy or putting in lighting that will allow the future owners to enjoy the outdoors even after the sun sets.
  4. Prep for a virtual showing. To help maintain social distancing guidelines, many in-person showings have been replaced with virtual home tours. To make the most of your home’s virtual tour, be sure your space is clean and has good lighting for photos. Think about the path you want potential buyers to take and “walk” them through your home in that order. Don’t forget to highlight the features that will be the most appealing to potential buyers.
