When summer is at its peak, temperatures usually are, too. While outdoor activities will always be associated with the year’s warmest, sunniest season, there’s a lot to be said for spending some quality time inside with your air conditioner and asking yourself:

How can I beat the summer heat?

Here are some ideas for having fun while staying cool before the kids go back to school!

DIY Spa Day. Pamper yourself with a day of self-care and relaxation. Transform your bathroom into a serene spa-like setting. Indulge in a soothing bubble bath (maybe with cooler water than usual), apply replenishing face masks, and give yourself a manicure or pedicure. Add scented candles and calming music to the mix and let the stresses of your busy life simply melt away!

Board Game Bonanza. Gather your family or invite friends over for some old-school enjoyment with a little competitiveness for good measure. Dust off those classic games like Monopoly, Scrabble, or Clue, or try newer ones like Skyjo, Double Ditto, or Splendor. Make sure you have plenty of cold drinks and light snacks on hand!

Foodie Fiesta. Summer is an excellent time to experiment with new recipes and refine your culinary skills. If you can avoid increasing the heat with your oven or stovetop, even better! Use seasonal produce and try your hand at making summery salads, fruity desserts, or homemade ice cream. You could even host a friendly chef’s competition where everyone prepares a dish that follows a specific theme.

Big Screen Soiree. A lot of people go to the theater in the summer, simply for the air conditioning. You can get the same benefit at home for a fraction of the cost! Create a cozy ambiance with blankets, pillows, and mood lighting, then choose a theme or genre and curate a lineup of your favorite movies or TV shows. Whether it’s a sci-fi marathon, a collection of classic rom-coms, or the latest streaming series you’ve been wanting to binge-watch, hours of entertainment will be on tap for you and your guests!

New Tricks for Not-So-Old Dogs. The summer months offer an ideal opportunity to expand your knowledge or master a new skill. Explore online classes or video tutorials about hobbies like painting, playing a musical instrument, or photography. Take a deep dive into educational podcasts, TED Talks, or virtual museum tours to broaden your horizons and feed your curiosity.

Indoor Picnic. If the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor dining, bring everything inside! Spread a blanket or set up a cozy area on your living room floor. Make sandwiches and other finger foods, pour some chilled beverages, and enjoy a delightful picnic experience without the sunburn, heat, and mosquitoes!
